Scandinavian Defense
The Scandinavian Defense immediately challenges the king-pawn opening by playing d5 against e4. Black immediately challenges White's central pawn and can recapture with the queen after exd5 or develop a knight first. An early queen recapture lets White develop with tempo, so Black must balance recovering material with safe queen placement and rapid development.
Opening moves: 1. e4 d5 2. exd5 Qxd5
White’s plan
Develop with tempo against the queen and build a sound center. Finish development instead of chasing the queen with unsupported pawns.
Black’s plan
Choose a safe queen retreat or a knight-recapture plan. Develop the minor pieces and support the center before collecting more pawns.
Ideas behind the moves
d5
Challenge e4 at once.
Qxd5
Recover the pawn with the queen; prepare for a developing attack on it.
Qa5
Place the queen on a5. Before moving her again, check threats and the development of your other pieces.
Three mistakes to watch for
- Moving the queen repeatedly to collect pawns before developing.
- Chasing the queen so far that the center becomes weak.
- Mixing a knight-recapture variation with a queen-recapture move order.
