Petrov Defense

The Petrov Defense is a king-pawn opening in which Black counterattacks e4 by developing the knight to f6. Black counterattacks White's e-pawn instead of defending e5 immediately. Central captures and accurate move order matter, because symmetry can hide forcing checks and tactical differences. The main defense and the sharper Stafford Gambit should be studied as distinct choices.

Opening moves: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nf6

White’s plan

Develop after the central exchanges and check forcing threats before taking pawns. Build a d4 center when the pieces support it.

Black’s plan

Handle central captures in the correct order, then develop and challenge d4. Distinguish the main defense from tactical gambit choices.

Ideas behind the moves

  1. e5

Put the pawn on e5 to occupy a central square. Compare the resulting center with the other branches.

  2. Nf6

Develop the knight from g8 to f6. Connect this piece placement with the central structure.

  3. d6

Advance the d-pawn to d6. This changes which central squares the pawn can influence.

Three mistakes to watch for

  1. Copying a central capture before checking the opponent's forcing reply.
  2. Taking material while overlooking an attack on the king.
  3. Treating a Stafford trap as a forced win against accurate defense.

A tactical example

Stafford Gambit: Punish Bxd8

White grabs the queen with Bxd8 and overlooks the attack on the king. Bxf2+ forces Ke2; Bg4 then gives mate. White can avoid this line by choosing a better defense.

This trap depends on a specific opponent mistake. It is not a guaranteed win from the opening.
